I always find it so fascinating how growing up in completely different cultures affects oneself. I am grappling with that at the moment. Oh man, a Tibetan monk selling Budweiser. Aiyo! The older I get the more 'unsettled' I become - why should I settle when there is so much out there?! I've been lucky, I guess in that I can feel at home almost anywhere so my drive isn't to find a place to belong but to explore and see something new. I wish everyone could have that feeling!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07994021604743043490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-353986282680972760.post-78573419031744597042018-06-04T13:45:37.074-07:002018-06-04T13:45:37.074-07:00An interesting read. I grew up between the US and Kenya, lived short term in Cornwall and Port Shepstone South Afr. and wound up working in China before Baltimore again and now W. Michigan. My Spanish teacher in Brattleboro VT was Japanese Brazilian, married to an irishman, of course, Midori McGee. ;) I'm nodding my head at a lot you've said, like how globalization meant the monks I met in Tibet were selling...wait for it... American Budweiser... out of their little shop. Please feel free to contact me through my site, Daraja.us, or my Daraja website page - www.facebook.com/darajatck. Great work! I deeply resonate with the thoughts of home. I recently wrote a book on my journey as a TCK in Tokyo. I released two chapters thus far. My best friend and I really struggled coming back to America with "reverse culture shock." As you know, it's a real thing! Anyways, if you have some time chapter one is at this link. Judging from your writing, you may relate! https://jesselmcdaniel.wordpress.com/Jessehttps://jesselmcdaniel.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-353986282680972760.post-8487898285006300402017-12-03T23:41:58.425-08:002017-12-03T23:41:58.425-08:00Thank you Tina!Thank you Tina!A.H. I cannot say that I have such a thing as a hometown. In my supposed two hometowns (located 50 kms from each other), I don't have a lot of people I hang out with, etc. I just have people from all my country and all over the world... But, people who are real locals can have great insights about a place, you are right!MyImageInspirationhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06896624836789819797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-353986282680972760.post-8542340107266197132017-09-17T02:11:43.185-07:002017-09-17T02:11:43.185-07:00I loooove your view on being a local somewhere. I was born in the West Indies, in Haiti, of American parents, commuted back and forth every five years until college, then was in the US full time except for one semester I taught in Mexico, in 2001. I've been teaching ESL in Thailand since 2010, but now planning to return to the US for health reasons. I speak English, Creole, Spanish, French, and Thai, but only completely fluent in Creole, although I can get along in the other languages, even read them.rachelbirderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01123987151927055745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-353986282680972760.post-36518101683632948942016-11-22T08:11:56.682-08:002016-11-22T08:11:56.682-08:00Thanks Marilyn! Thanks Marilyn!Alainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12413051427487218943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-353986282680972760.post-15923911024327935252016-11-15T20:20:10.523-08:002016-11-15T20:20:10.523-08:00Very well said, Alaine!
